Elizabeth Olsen is among the five nominees for the 2013 EE Rising Star award voted on by the public and presented during the British Academy Film Awards.
Olsen, whose acting resume includes Martha Marcy May Marlene and Silent House, made it onto a list drawn up by a jury, which included Benedict Cumberbatch.
Olsen described being considered for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts award as a “huge honor,” adding “so many actors whom I admire have been recognized in this category, and I’m very thankful to BAFTA and the jury for selecting me.”
But with the award being voted on by the British public, Olsen faces stiff competition. Also vying for the popular vote is Andrea Riseborough who just finished shooting Oblivion opposite Tom Cruise.
Suraj Sharma, a 19-year-old girl from New Delhi, India, who beat 3,000 challengers to star in Ang Lee’s Life of Pi, is also in the running.
Juno Temple, whose turn in Atonement with Keira Knightley, Saoirse Ronan and former Rising Star winner James McAvoy came after her breakthrough as Cate Blanchett’s daughter in Notes on a Scandal, is also nominated.
Swedish-born Alicia Vikander is also nominated after turns in Anna Karenina opposite Keira Knightley and Jude Law and the period drama A Royal Affair with Mads Mikkelsen.
The winner will be announced during the EE British Academy Film Awards on Feb. 10.
Cell phone network giant EE is the award’s sponsor and also the main sponsor for the British Academy’s film awards.
Now in its eighth year, the nod aims to identify talent set for bigger things and is the only award at the British Academy Film Awards to be voted on by the public.
Previous recipients include McAvoy in 2006, Eva Green in 2007, Shia LaBeouf in 2008, Noel Clarke in 2009, Kristen Stewart in 2010, Tom Hardy in 2011 and Adam Deacon this year.
The nominees for the Rising Star award were unveiled at an event at BAFTA’s central London base by Pippa Harris, the chair of the award jury and deputy chair of BAFTA’s film committee.
Harris said: “This year, the quality of emerging acting talent has been just incredible, and the jury had a very tough job selecting the short list. It’s great that the EE Rising Star Awards gives the general public the opportunity to champion their film stars of the future and I can’t wait to see who they vote their winner for 2013.”
The jury picking the quintet of names also included Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald and casting director Nina Gold (The King’s Speech).
The award was created in honor of Mary Selway, the BAFTA-winning casting director whose career spanned three decades and over ninety films before she died in 2004.
The nominations for this year’s EE British Academy Film Awards are scheduled to be announced on Wednesday.
