September 10, 2012   Jess   Comments Off on “Oldboy” lands release deal

Executives at Film District announced they would be releasing the much-anticipated movie Oldboy, which starts shooting later this year (12), in 2013.

The film, a Hollywood revamp of Chan-wook Park’s cult 2003 film, will star Josh Brolin as a vengeful captive seeking retribution against those who imprisoned him.

Samuel L. Jackson and Elizabeth Olsen will co-star.

After months of not attending events Lizzie finally attended some. In August (I know I’m late) she attended the Red Hook Summer premiere in Los Angeles. On September 5 she attended the Swarovski Celebration of Crystal and Art and last Friday she attended the Moet & Chandon suite at the US Open. Photos have been added to the gallery, some of which I have to thank Sina for for donating them!

Never mind her pedigree. Actor Elizabeth Olsen has more than earned the accolades she’s received since captivating audiences as the titular heroine in last year’s ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene.’ With four new movies on the horizon, including the romantic comedy ‘Liberal Arts,’ Nick Haramis predicts she’ll soon be, well, everywhere you look.

Bag-lady chic. It’s the first thing that comes to mind when Elizabeth Olsen enters Il Buco on a balmy afternoon in July, but not for the reasons one might expect. The 23-year-old actor and budding fashion darling, who is currently between apartments, walks into her favorite upscale Italian restaurant carrying a paper shopping bag from Pamela Rolland, which tears in half just before she sets it down next to our table. “Shit. Shit. Shit,” she whispers to herself while expeditiously gathering its quotidian goulash: a stick of deodorant, a pair of gym sneakers, an empty water bottle, the latest issue of Whole Living magazine, and used copies of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road and Carson McCullers’ The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, both emblazoned with Oprah’s seal of approval.

A week earlier Olsen was in Serbia, where she spent two months channeling the eponymous heroine in filmmaker Charlie Stratton’s adaptation of Émile Zola’s novel-turned-play Thérèse Raquin. Yesterday she started preproduction on Very Good Girls, the story of two recent high school graduates (Olsen and Dakota Fanning) who fall for the same guy. “This has been the fastest I’ve had to shift between two projects,” she says, before ordering a glass of 1997 Burlotto Barolo from the restaurant’s hideaway wine cellar. “Actually, that’s a lie. When I filmed Martha, it overlapped with another movie I was doing at the same time.” She is, of course, referring to Sean Durkin’s award-winning Martha Marcy May Marlene, in which she played a troubled drifter who escapes from a Spahn Ranch–type farmhouse where she’d lived under the lecherous rule of a magnetic cult leader (John Hawkes). As a bruised and rough-hewn shell of a woman on the verge of a paranoia-fueled breakdown, Olsen’s nuanced performance managed to combine very adult terror with teenage petulance, and it’s the reason she’s been busy ever since. “Truth be told, I feel a little crazy right now,” she says of her frenzied work schedule.

August 29, 2012   Jess   Comments Off on Elizabeth in Bon Appetit Magazine

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Olsen, the breakout star of last year’s Martha Marcy May Marlene and the lead of this month’s Liberal Arts, is no ingenue when it comes to eating. She packs her own seasonings when traveling, dreams of hunting boar with Eric Ripert, and only flashes her last name (she’s the younger sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley) to get reservations at her favorite restaurant. Oh, and she was way ahead of the butchering curve.

You just got back from filming a movie in Serbia and moved into a new apartment. How’s the kitchen?
Elizabeth Olsen: I love it, but I can’t find my spices. I think I left them at my sister’s, because I travel with them. I like my sea salts with me at all times.

You’re from California but live in New York. Let’s compare the food scenes.
EO: I just realized that the L.A. food scene is really good right now. I’ve been to Ink and Son of a Gun and Black Market. I hung out with Michael Voltaggio at Ink–that was fun.

We’ll get back to that. Tell the truth: Does the last name help you score good tables?
EO: I only use it at Il Buco in New York, because it’s one of my favorite restaurants. If they say they’re booked, then I’m kinda like, “Okay, well, I’m in the computer…”

Did you make any culinary discoveries on your press tour for Martha last year?
EO: Sean Durkin, the director, and I decided to eat our way across the country, but after five cities we felt sick and stopped. Luckily, we made it to Publican in Chicago and Vetri in Philadelphia.

There’s a pappardelle to die for at Vetri.
EO: The only pasta I ever order is the Bolognese at Bar Pitti in the West Village. Normally I don’t feel like having a belly full of pasta.

Is that because you need to stay thin?
EO: No. I look at some actresses and say, “There’s no way she eats.” That’s not me. I get way too much happiness from good food.

Well, how industrious are you in the kitchen?
EO: Very! For my first dinner party when I was 17, I wanted to make lamb chops. I bought a full lamb and tried to butcher it–an entire lamb, fat flying everywhere, limbs, you know. My mom was like, “Lizzie, you can ask someone to do that!” I had no idea.

If acting doesn’t work out, you can always become a butcher.
EO: I actually want to go on Avec Eric with Eric Ripert and hunt boar with him. I also want to go to an Italian island and do cuisine properly with some famous Italian chef and, like, his mother.

Maybe Michael Voltaggio will take you?
EO: [Laughs] I would love to date a chef. I’d probably get really fat, but I don’t care.

I have to admit, I had high expectations when meeting Elizabeth Olsen. Since her breakout role in last year’s Martha Marcy May Marlene, the indie darling (and kid sister of Mary-Kate and Ashley) has carved a niche for herself as one of those rare cool girls who don’t take themselves too seriously. And she proved me right. In person, Olsen, 23, is upbeat and genuine, and when she talks about her passions—school, clothes, her new role in this month’s romance Liberal Arts—her Kewpie-like eyes light up. Get ready to fall in love, because…

She doesn’t trade on her name

“My last name has always been my motivator to get proper acting training and be taken seriously. I didn’t get to where I am because of who I’m related to.”

She’s juggling it all (so normal!)

“I love school, but I got cast in Martha while I was at New York University. So I was like, Screw it. I’ll take this semester off. I’m still trying to figure out how I can finish my degree while doing all this!”

She’s weirded out by fame

“Yesterday three people told me that I look like Elizabeth Olsen. That’s never happened before. So awkward.”

She looks up to her big sisters

“They figured it all out, and I should just listen to them more.”
